The Shift Left & the Impact of the Midterms on Healthcare
Democrats just took both chambers. Aneesh Chopra, Christopher Kerns and Mike Desjadon join Ruth Reader and Christina Farr live to talk through what they'll try to do on healthcare — and what's actually achievable under a Republican White House.

Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate on Tuesday, and the campaign that got them there was in large part a fight about health care — premiums, coverage losses, and who pays. Now comes the harder question: with a Republican in the White House through January 2029, what can they actually do about it?
Enhanced ACA premium tax credits have lapsed in the middle of open enrollment for 2027 coverage. Medicaid work requirements under the 2025 reconciliation law are scheduled to begin January 1, 2027 across most expansion states. Democratic leaders have said restoring the subsidies and unwinding the Medicaid cuts are their first targets. We're pulling together a same-day panel to separate the agenda from the arithmetic.
We have deliberate political range here — and all three guests are health care experts rather than pure political analysts.
What we'll cover
- How much of Tuesday's result was really about health care affordability
- The Democratic to-do list: ACA subsidies, Medicaid, drug costs — and the realistic order of operations
- Where the leverage actually is under divided government: appropriations, year-end health extenders, oversight
- What new committee gavels in January mean for HHS, CMS and FDA — and how much of the agenda runs through rulemaking Congress can't easily reach
- What it changes for health systems, payers, and founders selling into government programs in 2027
