The big interview with Ro Khanna on how to regulate AI
For those of you who don’t know Representative Ro Khanna [D-Calif.], he is one of the key figures in Congress leading on issues of AI regulation and competition with China.
This week, ahead of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese Xi Jinping, Khanna has been advocating for the president to come to an agreement with China on putting safeguards around AI. In particular he wants to put a pause on AI that improves itself without oversight. Obviously this position comes after AI safety researchers postulated that this technology could kill us all within a decade. Those viral assertions have prompted big questions around whether we should “pace” frontier model development.
In an interview, I asked Khanna questions about what his ideas mean for the sectors in which AI operates—namely health care.
