White House asks AI companies to sprint towards consensus on governance

The White House is asking a select list of AI companies to spend a month hashing out a potential system for benchmarking and evaluating clinical AI. Invitees include electronic health record companies, large AI companies, and companies that provide AI monitoring services, according to three people with knowledge of the invites who asked for anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the plans.

The FDA does not have a comprehensive system for continuously monitoring the real-world performance of authorized AI medical devices post authorization. In guidance published last year, the agency asked developers to include plans for on-going performance monitoring in their submission application. But neither industry nor government have come to a consensus on how health AI products should be monitored for safety after being deployed. Still, the sprint adds to a growing list of requests federal officials have placed on the health care companies.
